Literacy Narrative:

We were asked to write about an experience with language, speaking a new language, or joining a new group with its own lingo. I wrote about cheerleading because I learned so much and cheerleading has honestly changed my life. I'm glad that I learned the lingo, and the explanation is below.

About the assignment
Feedback from Malcolm

I made a 46/50 on this assignment. Some valuable insight that my professor provided me with: "You have some good tension in places, and I think you can turn it up a notch through slowing down and really expanding some of your telling into showing via a couple of scenes." I enjoyed this feedback because this was my first major writing assignment and it was a good basis for me to be a better writer in this course.

Reflection:

The thought of having to write my Literacy Narrative was just a headache. I started looking at it before the class even started with hopes of being overly prepared. Last semester, I was really good about getting work done far before it was due on most things. Not all, because I’m only human. Of course I procrastinated on some things, but I do not like falling behind because I know that it’ll be hard to catch up. If I were to fall too far behind, I would eventually just give up. That’s why I get stuff done before hand, because I am not a quitter.

In my journal for January 14, I knew about the assignment prior to class, so I started writing in my journal as if I were starting my paper. At the end of my journal, I listed out other stuff that I knew that I wanted to include within my paper. Later that I day I created a document for the actual paper and a reflection. I did this for most, if not all of my assignments because I know that reflections are necessary for my eportfolio. I again made a list of the items I want to include within my paper. I then wrote particular facts that I knew I wanted under each category so that I could paste them into my narrative. I knew that the narrative was a minimum of four pages so I had a pretty long list in a somewhat timeline order of major literature, writing, and reading assignments that went hand in hand with my story.

I pushed the paper off for a few days before I started writing it, because I just didn’t feel like doing it. I literally did every mandatory blog assignment before I started the narrative. I finally started on January 17 while watching Spongebob Squarepants. It literally took me so long to finish because I continued to get distracted. After I finished, I closed it until the next day, hoping new ideas would come to mind.

So, I pushed my corrections for my narrative back. Thankfully, I found out that we are not limited to only writing about our reading and writing experience. So, I changed my topic to my cheerleading experience. I was relieved that I had an interesting topic but was upset that I had to restart. I knew that my grade would be affected in a more positive way.
